Best Craft Beer Bars in Highland Park

Originally featured on Happening in Highland Park

Walking down the streets of Highland Park, mainly York and Figueroa that is, there’s no doubt you’ll encounter various places to get a beer. Of course you can go to your usual bar where you can get a bucket or pitcher of your routine Budweiser or Corona brew, but if it’s quality you’re looking for, then read on.

The explosion of craft beer in Los Angeles alone has been incredible. Breweries are popping up like wildflowers, so there’s no surprise that bars are taking note and modifying their offerings to showcase this. Whether it’s a local brewery, or craft beer from the East Coast, these neighborhood bars will enlighten you with the beer knowledge and flavor you need to satisfy your thirst. The best part is you can walk to three-quarters of the list, so what are you waiting for?

Johnny’s Bar

Starting with the north side of York Blvd sits the diviest bar on the list. Johnny’s Bar is the type of bar you can visit if you want an exceptional draft beer and bottle list, but don’t want to drag your friends to a fussy bar. This is where you can have your cake and eat it, too. With newly added taps just this past year bringing the total to a comfy 23, you’ll be able to get the best selection. Don’t forget Johnny’s also carries a great bottle list with top notch breweries like Almanac, the Bruery, Allagash, and the list goes on…

Although there’s no food sold at this bar, they won’t mind if you bring your own munchies from one of the tasty food offerings nearby.

The York

Just a few steps away on York Blvd is another neighborhood favorite with a name you can’t miss…The York. This bar has been a popular local hangout spot due to their all day food offerings, full liquor and beer menu. You can always count on The York to carry the ever delicious and local Craftsman 1903 lager, along with other mainstays like Stone and Golden Road. With the beer selection here, you’ll be sure to please any palate.

Make sure to come hungry and get some of their scrumptious sriracha wings, pulled pork Cubano, or fish and chips with a craft brew to wash it all down.

The Hermosillo/Highland Park Brewery

Keep walking down south on York Blvd. and you’ll hit the next bar on the list with the freshest beer around. The Hermosillo has been around for a few years now, since 2012 to be exact, but their new brewery program called Highland Park Brewery celebrated their one year anniversary just last month. With a great rotating tap list of 16 beers, dominated by their own brews, there’s no doubt you’ll have a good time at this beer and wine bar. The best part is you can try all their house beers when you order a flight.

The food menu here is a bit more upscale than other beer bars around. From cheese and charcuterie to a brioche bun fried chicken sandie, you’ll have a good time pairing your freshly tapped craft beer with delectable dishes. Even if you’re not that hungry, don’t forget to order the Papas Nachos.

Greyhound Bar and Grill

The Greyhound Bar and Grill is a bonafide gastro pub in all its glory. Cheesy loaded fries? Check. Sculpin IPA? Check. Bubbly wine? Check. The list goes on. With a huge beer list that helps you navigate by style, whether you want light, dark, or a funky sour beer, they’ve got you covered.

Located on the rapidly changing Figueroa corridor, you’ll be happy this local bar is here to save you from the hot sun beaming down the back of your neck. Just pop in, sit down, order the steak nuggets, and get whatever’s on nitro. Their nitro tap selection always changes, but rest assured that it’ll be deliciously creamy and velvety. What more could you ask for?
